Although Tigres arrived at the second leg of the quarterfinals against Cruz Azul with the advantage thanks to the 1-0 result achieved in the first leg, Los Felinos slowly lost the course of the game during the first half. Luckily for them, Cruz Azul lacked the aim needed to leave them out of the semifinals and now will face Atlas.
The first mistake that Tigres had was after 18 minutes, when Javier Aquino recovered a ball close to Tigres’s goal, but instead of clearing it he tried to control it and Santiago Giménez stole it, passing it to Cristian Tabó, who shot against Nahuel Guzmán point-blank.
After that, it took a while for Tigres to focus again, and even if La Máquina had a few options to ensure their presence in the semifinals, although they couldn’t take advantage of the situation and add another goal to the score.
But for Aquino, the mistake he had during the first minutes of the game wasn’t enough, as just a minute before the first half ended, he left Los Felinos in disadvantage, as he made himself getting sent-off on a play in the midfield.
Although at first the referee showed him the yellow card, the VAR called him to revise the play again as they believed there was enough evidence to change his decision and modify the color of the card, sending him off just a minute before the first half ended.
Aquino lifted his leg looking to stop the clearance that Ángel Romero was attempting but missed the ball and instead hit with the cleats in the knee, giving the referee enough arguments to leave Tigres with 10 men for the rest of the game.
Aquino will miss the first leg of the semifinals, something that will leave in disadvantage the team coached by Miguel Herrera, as the former Mexico international was an essential player throughout the regular season for Tigres.
Aquino is one of the most hated players by Cruz Azul followers after he mocked the lack of titles that La Máquina had up until a year ago. Although he’s not the only one that has done it, it was taken as an insult given that he was formed in the Cruz Azul academy.
