For the first six rounds of Clausura 2022, Cruz Azul was one of the top contenders to win Liga MX title once again, just after a year after they lifted their ninth trophy. But after that, they haven’t been able to find the regularity needed to compete against the top teams.

The breaking point for La Máquina was the sudden departure of Álvaro Dávila as sporting director, as his places was taken by Jaime Ordiales, who was part of La Máquina’s structure in the past and doesn’t have a good relationship with Juan Reynoso.

Since then, Cruz Azul has won only three games in Liga MX, victories that have helped them remain at the top of the table thanks to the 13 points that they earned in the first six games of the season, but they now are far from the level showed by teams like Club América, Club Pachuca or Tigres.

Los Cementeros were also eliminated by Pumas in the semifinals of the CONCACAF Champions League, with a 2-1 aggregate, something that was labeled as a failure given that they had built a roster to compete for both tournaments.

Cruz Azul already has his successor

Reynoso will have one last chance to redeem himself on Saturday night, when they play against Club América in Estadio Azteca. A victory for La Máquina, added to a draw or defeat from either Club Puebla or Atlas, will mean a direct ticket to Liguilla, as they’ll finish on the top four.

But if that doesn’t happen, Ordiales already has a plan to replace him, something that he’s been trying to do since before Reynoso arrived, but now he has green light to do it from Víctor Velázquez, president of the club.

According to reports from Diario Récord, Cruz Azul is pursuing the signing of Diego Cocca, who currently is coaching Atlas and made them Liga MX Champions the past season. Cocca hasn’t renewed his contract with Los Zorros, which opens the possibility for La Máquina to negotiate with him.

What will happen to Reynoso?

The Peruvian coach is still under contract with Cruz Azul for six more months, although La Máquina is looking to negotiate with him to part ways before his contract expires. One of the options that Reynoso has if he leaves Cruz Azul is the Peruvian national team, as they will part ways with Ricardo Gareca if they don’t make it to the World Cup.
