After having a bye-week thanks to the position on the table, Club América returned to activity on Wednesday night for the first leg of the quarterfinals, as they visited Club Puebla in Estadio Cuauhtémoc in a game that ended in a 1-1 draw.

The reason why Henry Martín has lost his starting role in Club América

Although Club Puebla was superior for a better part of the game and opened the score sheet first thanks to a goal scored by Fernando Aristeguieta 10 minutes into the second half, Las Águilas were able to equalize the game with a header by Sebastián Cáceres.

The series will be decided in Estadio Azteca on Saturday night, although Club América won’t be able to have their starting striker, as Federico Viñas left the game after only 20 minutes with a foot injury on a play that neither the referee nor the VAR checked to see if it could have been called as a penalty.

In his place, Fernando “Tano” Ortíz will have to start Henry Martín, who entered the game to replace Viñas and was able to generate a few dangerous plays, although the lack of confidence he’s been having prevented him from scoring.

Will Viñas be ready for the semifinals?

Club Puebla showed that they are going to be a tough rival to beat, which is why “El Tano” Ortíz will have to plan a perfect game if they want to make it into the next stage, something that will be complicated given the absence of Viñas in the attack.

The 23-year-old Uruguayan striker was moved to a hospital to be examined by medical staff, and the first reports suggest that he suffered from a foot fracture. If this turns out to be true, Federico Viñas won’t be available for Las Águilas for the remainder of Liguilla.

The same reports inform that it will take from six up to eight weeks for him to fully recover, meaning that Viñas not only will miss the rest of Clausura 2022 but also the start of Apertura 2022, which will begin earlier than usual given that the World Cup will be held during November.

Viñas wasn’t the only injured player for Las Águilas

It’s yet to be seen if Club América will be able to have Richard Sánchez for the game in Estadio Azteca, as the Paraguayan midfielder also left the game injured during the first half. His place was taken by Pedro Aquino, who was waiting for an opportunity to return to the starting XI.
