It took five games for Club América to finally know what it meant to win in Clausura 2022, as they were able to beat Santos Laguna in TSM by a 3-2 score. And it seemed that after that victory, Las Águilas finally were on track to recover the ground lost during the first month of the season.
Emilio Azcárraga won’t just fire Santiago Solari, but also Santiago Baños
But after that, they lost back-to-back games against Mazatlán FC and CF Pachuca, on matches that were marked by the defensive mistakes of Las Águilas, and the evident lack of confidence that now has taken over the whole squad.
According to reports, Emilio Azcárraga gave Santiago Solari a grace period that ends this weekend, when Las Águilas receive Pumas in Estadio Azteca. If América doesn’t win on the Clásico Capitalino, Azcárraga won’t wait more time and Solari will have to start looking for a new job somewhere else.
Neither Emilio Azcárraga nor Santiago Baños were expecting that Club América will be having such a crisis with Solari on the bench, which is why they didn’t think of a plan B. But now that they have started looking for a potential replacement, a few names have joined the mix.
For now, the coach that could immediately replace Solari is Diego Ramírez, who currently is the Sporting Director of Las Águilas. But the long-term answer could be Hernán Crespo, who after his stint with Sao Paulo was over, is ready to assume the challenge.
Club América is used to paying some of the highest salaries in Liga MX, as they are one of the most successful teams in Mexican soccer. Santiago Solari is currently earning $2.5 million per year, a sum that will decrease a bit if Crespo arrives in Coapa, as his last salary was around $2.2 million per season.
