Club América managed to beat 3-2 Club Puebla in the second leg of the quarterfinals to ensure their ticket to semifinals after they saved a 1-1 draw from their visit to Estadio Cuauhtémoc mid-week during the first leg.
Although Israel Reyes and Fernando Aristeguieta scored for Club Puebla, it was Diego Valdés, Alejandro Zendejas and surprisingly Henry Martín who scored for Las Águilas, giving them the victory in a series that was marked by the controversial decisions of the referees.
Las Águilas will now have to wait for the results of the games played on Sunday to know who they are going to face in the semifinals, but if there aren’t any surprises, their rival will be CF Pachuca, who finished the regular season as leaders of Liga MX.
América is expecting to have Federico Viñas back into the lineup, sending Henry Martín back to the bench, as the Mexican striker hasn’t been able to contribute as expected during Clausura 2022, something that made him lost his role in the starting XI since Fernando “Tano” Ortíz took over.
Club América followers have criticized the performances of the 29-year-old forward as he was involved in several mistakes that could have helped Las Águilas had a more comfortable season, given that for the first half of Clausura 2022 they were standing last.
But that hasn’t stopped Gerardo “Tata” Martino from considering Martín as a relevant player for the roster, even if the strikers that have been called regularly to the Mexican national team haven’t scored consistently.
According to reports, and from what “Tata” Martino has showed, Martín is on pace to play with the Aztec squad in Qatar, as he’s considered to be part of the 26 players that the Argentine coach will call up for the final roster.
Reports from TUDN inform that Las Águilas will make him transferable over the summer transfer window, as they are looking to add a striker that has a better scoring streak, although his status as Mexican international could help him remain in Club América for at least until after the World Cup.
