Guillermo Ochoa is one of the most distinguishable players that Club América has, as he was formed in the Academy teams of Las Águilas and debuted with the club in 2003, where he played until 2011 and returned in 2019 after 8 years in Europe.
Daniel Brailovsky could be Santiago Baños replacement in Club América
When he decided to return to Liga MX, he signed with Las Águilas for three and a half years, which means that his contract is ending at the end of this year, and although he’s one of the few players in the current squad that is identified with the club and their ideals, he might not be able to close a deal to prolong his stay.
According to former América goalkeeper and now TV analysts Moises Muñoz, one of Las Águilas policies regarding the signing and renewal of players is that they only give one-year contracts to players that are over 30 years, which means that that’s the only way that Ochoa could stay in América.
But that’s not the only thing that will prevent him from signing a contract extension, as Las Águilas will also consider reducing his salary, given that both his age and the recent performances he’s had will influence the reduction, which currently is of $2.3 million per year.
Reports suggest that he hasn’t decided yet what he will do once his contract is over, as he enjoys being part of Club América, but he also wants to have a contract of at least two years with option of adding one more, something that will not happen if he stays with Las Águilas.
His situation is closely monitored by at least three MLS teams who would love to add the Mexico National Team starter goalkeeper, given that his acquisition will mean boosting their sales and assistance to the stadium.
According to reports, Houston Dynamo, Austin FC and the newest franchise of MLS Charlotte FC are interested in having Ochoa on their rosters, and it will be a matter of time to see if he decides to continue his career in MLS, as he can start negotiating with any team over the summer.
If he decides to arrive in MLS for the 2023 Season, he could become one of the highest-paid players, given his trajectory and the number of sponsors he’ll attract. He could join Javier Hernández, Carlos Vela and Héctor Herrera in a league that’s becoming more attractive for Mexican players.
If Guillermo Ochoa doesn’t renew his contract, Carlos Acevedo will be his replacement
