He doesn’t score with Club América but there’s a coach that wants Henry Martín on their team

The story of Las Águilas in Clausura 2022 has turned out to be one of the best comebacks in Mexican soccer in recent years, as there’s now four games between them and a new Liga MX title after starting the season at the bottom of the table.

When Fernando “Tano” Ortíz took over the team after eight rounds of the regular season, Club América were standing last with only six points thanks to one victory and three draws that Santiago Solari achieved when he was still coaching Las Águilas.

And for the game that Ortíz debuted as Las Águilas coach, things seemed to keep trending in the same direction, as they lost the advantage against CF Monterrey and ended up losing that game 2-1. But since then, “El Tano” found a way of making Club América a winning team once again.

What did he do to return to the right track?

The Clásico Nacional marked the start of the good streak that Las Águilas currently have, as they haven’t lost a game since round 9 of Clausura 2022. Against Chivas, Ortíz prioritized keeping a clean sheet and the game ended in a scoreless draw.

After that, Club América managed to have a six-game winning streak thanks to establishing a good competition during the week, something that Solari didn’t do as he had established his starting XI and the players knew that no matter what happened, they were going to play in the weekend.

Ortíz noticed this, and according to “El Tano” himself, as he revealed during the press conference after the game, he established a more direct relationship with the players, helping them feel welcomed and as part of something bigger, which improve the competition between them and with it the results on the pitch.

Will Ortíz remain as Club América coach?

During the broadcasting of the game, TUDN analysts revealed that if he managed to make it into the semifinals, his place in Las Águilas’s dugout will be almost ensured, but if they manage to win a new Liga MX title, he will remain at least two more years in front of Club América.
