Santiago Solari left Club América after eight rounds of Clausura 2022 in which he was only able to earn six points as a result of one victory and three draws in what translated in their worst start in Liga MX since the 1957-58 season and the first time being the last place since 2017.
Who is Fernando Ortiz, Club América's interim coach to replace Santiago Solari?
Emilio Azcárraga was going to wait until Saturday’s game against CF Monterrey to see what happened to Solari, but after Las Águilas performance in the match against Club Querétaro was so disappointing, he didn’t wait and decided to part ways with him on Wednesday morning.
In his place, Las Águilas decided to place Fernando “Tano” Ortíz, who arrived this year to Club América academy squads, where he was coaching the U-20 team. Reports suggest that he’ll be the interim coach until Clausura 2022 ends, and after that América will decide who will become their next coach.
Although “Tano” Ortíz only had two days to train with the senior team, Thursday and Friday, he already did more than what Santiago Solari did in the 14 months he was in Club América’s dugout, as he knows that what the Azulcremas need, is to give the young players a chance.
With Santiago Solari, only Santiago Naveda was able to debut with the first team and finding regularity in Liga MX, although Santiago Solari is known for playing with young players, as he coached Real Madrid Castilla, the academy team of the Merengues.
During his first press conference as Las Águilas coach, Ortíz said that he knows all the players in the U-20 and the ones that have the abilities and the needed level to be part of the senior squad on their visit to Monterrey.
“Yes, I know all of the players on the U-20 squad and the quality they have. I’m one of those coaches that likes to debut young players, and if I consider they can play with the senior team, then they will play,” “Tano” Ortíz said.
According to sports journalist Jonathan Peña, Fernando Ortíz knows that at least two players from the U-20 squad are ready to make their debut: 19-year-old right-back Emilio Lara, who already trained with the senior team, and 19-year-old offensive midfielder Karel Campos.
