Club América received CF Pachuca in Estadio Azteca for the first leg of the semifinals of Clausura 2022 on a game that ended in a 1-1 draw, after defeating Club Puebla by a 4-3 aggregate in the quarterfinals, where one of the players that suffered the most was Federico Viñas.
Diego Lainez's return to Club America is close, but Betis opposes it
During the first leg of the quarterfinals, Viñas had to leave the pitch after only 20 minutes had passed with a foot injury that Juan Pablo Segovia, La Franja center-back, caused him after a clash between the two of them and Antony Silva in the goal box.
The 23-year-old Uruguayan forward couldn’t be in the starting XI for the second leg as even if he didn’t suffer a broken foot as it was believed at first, he had an injury that required of seven stitches. Instead, Henry Martín returned to the lineup after seven games.
But nevertheless, Fernando Ortíz decided to have him on the bench in case that he was needed. Luckily for him he didn’t need to use him, as Las Águilas were able to win 3-2 and Henry Martín even managed to score the first goal of the game.
Fernando Ortíz didn’t wait for his foot to fully heal and decided to start him against Pachuca on the first leg of the semifinals, as according to TUDN, his return to the lineup had to do with a tactical decision, as Ortíz considers that he has a better strike than Henry Martín.
But the truth is that “El Tano” Ortíz doesn’t trust Henry Martín, as he knows that the Mexico international is having confidence issues that don’t benefit the team and their offensive intentions, which is why he preferred to start Viñas even if he’s not fully healed.
During the first half of the game, Viñas had a play hand to hand against Óscar Ustari inside the box, but he crashed it against Ustari’s body. Although he was substituted in the second half, he was vital in the game where América scored their goal, as another failed shoot gave Diego Valdés the chance of scoring thanks to a rebound.
Even if he only scored one goal during the regular season of Clausura 2022, Fernando Ortíz believes that the 23-year-old forward is the most dangerous striker that Club América have on their roster, showing that he’s being considered for the upcoming season, although Las Águilas are also looking to add a new striker.
Club América didn’t wait until the semifinals are over and decided the future of Fernando Ortíz
