José de Jesús Corona got injured prior the game against CF Montréal for the second leg of the quarterfinals of the CONCACAF Champions League started, and his place had to be taken by Sebastián Jurado, not only for that game, but for the next few games too, as he’ll be out of activity for at least three weeks.
The goalkeeper that Cruz Azul wants to replace José de Jesús Corona after his injury
The good thing for “Chuy” Corona is that the upcoming FIFA match window will help him to rest without having to miss any games, and his return to the starting XI of La Máquina could be for the game against Atlas, when the FIFA match window is over.
For now, Jurado was the starter goalkeeper for three straight games, against Club Puebla, CF Montréal, and CF Pachuca, although it was obvious that the lack of regularity has affected him, as he was involved in plenty of mistakes, especially on the first game against La Franja.
This opened a discussion not only for Cruz Azul followers, but also inside La Máquina, as they’re questioning if Jurado is the perfect replacement for “Chuy” Corona once he decides to retire, as he hasn’t showed any of the skills he exhibited when he was playing for Veracruz.
It’s early to assume that Corona will retire after this injury, as before it he didn’t show any signs of starting thinking in retiring, but the door is now open for Cruz Azul to see what the future holds for them once the 41-year-old goalkeeper retires.
Although Jurado is known for having great skills in the goal, he’s been erratic and the lack of confidence he has is evident, and if La Máquina don’t find a way of changing that soon, they will have to start looking for a new goalkeeper that can compete with him for the starting role.
That player might as well be Misael Corona, “Chuy” Corona’s son, who completed the whole process in Cruz Azul academy teams but given the lack of opportunities with the senior squad, he decided to leave La Máquina to earn regularity.
Misael Corona hasn’t closed the door to an eventual return to Cruz Azul, as his departure had to do with the lack of minutes he was having. For now, he’s established as the starting goalkeeper of Aguacateros Club Deportivo Uruapan, from Mexico’s third flight.
Cruz Azul already found the player that will replace Brayan Angulo if he leaves
