Cruz Azul closed 2021 with the satisfaction that this year was finally the big one. The Cementero team broke its streak of 23 years without a first division title by being Guardianes 2021 champions in Liga MX. However, the Cruz Azul board has a lot of work to do, as 13 first-team players will finish their contracts between June and December 2022.

La Máquina needs to renew them as soon as possible if it intends to avoid losing players such as Jonathan Rodríguez, Luis Romo, Juan Escobar, Guillermo 'Pol' Fernández, among others.

Players whose contracts expire after Clausura 2022

For the next semester, the Celestes could lose: Guillermo 'Pol' Fernández, Juan Escobar, Bryan Angulo, Pablo Aguilar, José 'Shaggy' Martínez, Jaiber Jiménez and Andrés Gudiño.

Some of these elements were recurrent starters of the team during the last year, while others performed a more low-key role in order to give depth to the squad. Now, they will have to decide which of them will continue in the team coached by Juan Reynoso.

Guillermo Pol Fernández

Cruz Azul and Guillermo 'Pol' Fernández are in negotiations, but far from reaching a renewal agreement with six months and one week before the end of his contract, the Cementero side must hurry to not lose the player.

In addition, reports say that Fernández has several clubs interested in signing him as a free agent next summer, so the need is on Cruz Azul's side and not 'Pol' Fernández's, who feels comfortable and happy at the club and would like to continue, as long as the renewal offer satisfies him.

Pablo Aguilar

The Paraguayan player is set to leave Cruz Azul after almost 4 years with the club. Aguilar arrived in 2018 from América, Cruz Azul biggest rival. The former Xolos de Tijuana and América player will be 35 years old by the end of the next tournament, a situation that is not favorable to the player. It’s already known that the player will not renew his contract to leave for free for the next transfer window.

Brayan Angulo

The Ecuadorian player arrived in August 2019 to La Máquina from Emelec. The first tournament for Angulo was not good so the Cruz Azul board decided to loan the player to Xolos de Tijuana. In the north squad, the footballer stayed for a year and came back to report at the orders of coach Juan Reynoso.

The Ecuadorian became a key player for the Cruz Azul championship last may, however, for the 2021 Apertura, the player did not have his best shape and couldn´t help the team to defend the crown. For 2022 Clausura the player must improve or could leave the team in a free transfer.

Players whose contracts expire in December 2022

By the end of 2022 year, the departures could be even more important and painful. Cruz Azul could lose: Luis Romo, Jonathan Rodriguez, Rafael Baca, Sebastian Jurado, Lucas Passerini and Alexis Gutierrez.

Romo and Cabecita have been among the stars of the team last year and a crucial part of the Guardianes 2021 champion team, meaning that losing them could represent significant challenges.

Meanwhile, Jurado was rescued from the Veracruz side that lost its affiliation to Mexican soccer, thinking that he would be the goalkeeper of the future. However, Corona has remained firmly in the starting lineup and it is time to decide if they want to continue betting on the former goalkeeper of Los Escualos.
