Could Querétaro be disqualified from Liga MX? Regulation makes it feasible

Following the fight between Atlas and Gallos fans, the Querétaro team could be at risk of no longer playing in Mexican soccer.

Following the fight between Atlas and Gallos fans, the Querétaro team could be at risk of no longer playing in Mexican soccer.

After the tragic events at La Corregidora Stadium, Querétaro has put its participation in Liga MX at risk, as the competition's regulations would have a basis for possible disaffiliation of Los Gallos, even Mikel Arriola, president of the competition, said that “it is possible”.

Tragedy in Liga MX: Querétaro vs. Atlas, how did the conflict start, and who was involved?

It is known that although the damage was caused by a group of fans, they are to some extent the 'responsibility' of the clubs, so Querétaro could pay the consequences for the actions of its supporters' club and could be disqualified from Liga MX.

What do the regulations say and why would Querétaro be disaffiliated?

Mexican soccer regulations are clear and focus on several points that the Gallos allegedly failed to comply with after the brawl with the Atlas fans, which are based on safety issues, repeated offenses, and the commitment of local authorities and the teams.

A fragment of the regulations states: "An Affiliate of the FMF shall lose its affiliation if it commits a serious offense and/or violates or fails to comply on more than one occasion with any provision of these Regulations, the Bylaws, the Directives or the decisions of FIFA, CONCACAF and/or the FMF itself".

Something that seriously affects Querétaro is the recurrence of serious and violent incidents, as it should be remembered that in 2019 their supporters' club had a pitched fight with the Atlético San Luis supporters club, where there were also many injuries.

"In the case of more serious events, the sanction may be 6,000 UMAs as determined by the Disciplinary Commission. In case of recidivism, the Disciplinary Commission shall have the power to increase the sanction to the offender."

Stadium security is vital

In addition, Section B of the grounds for disaffiliation of a team from Liga MX, in Article 66, states that a club will lose its membership if "the viability of any competition organized by the FMF is put at risk".

To be more clear, the violent acts by Queretaro fans have been repetitive and the FMF has opened an investigation to see why there were not enough security elements to contain the fight.

All Liga MX matches are authorized as long as the clubs are committed to safeguarding the integrity of the fans, in terms of having sufficient security elements to prevent this type of events, but since there were no such security measures in La Corregidora, where even people were carrying weapons (such as knives), the matter will be investigated.

Mikel Arriola, president of Liga MX, commented that they will not hold back on sanctions and that if there is sufficient evidence in this legal case against Querétaro, they could remove Querétaro from the league.
