The Guerreros arrive at their ninth participation in the tournament in a very bad moment in Liga MX, as they are the only two teams in the Mexican tournament without a win so far, along with Querétaro

How does Santos Laguna get to the CONCACAF Champions League?

After 5 Rounds, the Guerreros have 0 wins, 1 draw, and 4 defeats, and are also the highest-scoring team in the tournament so far, with 13 goals against.

Therefore, they go to the end of Liga MX 2022 with 1 point so far. Quite far from what their new coach, Pedro Caixinha, promised, who stated that he would make his team win the Concacaf Champions League to go to the FIFA Club World Cup.

"We came to a team that was from the Shire, became much more national and now wants to internationalize. The best opportunity is to win that competition because it can get you into a Club World Cup."

This is how Santos Laguna has performed in the Concacaf Champions League

Pedro Caixinha's team has never been crowned in the highest club tournament of the confederation, although it has come close to winning the title on at least two occasions.

One in 2011-2012 against Rayados de Monterrey, and the other in 2012-2013, also against La Pandilla, who for the second consecutive tournament ruined the Guerreros' dream of winning the title.

Apart from those two occasions, Santos Laguna's performance has not been the best, as in the first participation they were eliminated by FAS of El Salvador in the second round of the tournament, in 1995.

Later, in 2002, the club from Torreon was eliminated by Kansas City Wizards, today known as Sporting Kansas City, in the quarterfinals of the competition.

In the 2008-2009 tournament, the club would fall to Atlante in the semifinals, and in 2010-2011 its performance would show a setback when it was eliminated by Cruz Azul in the quarterfinals.

After their most outstanding performances in 2011-2012 and 2012-2013, Santos would be eliminated again by Club America in 2015-2016, and in 2019 in their last participation, the Guerreros would fall again, this time in the semifinals against Tigres.

Leon, Cruz Azul, and Pumas UNAM, with very different performances in the CONCACAF Champions League

The other teams that will represent Mexico in the competition have had very different results in their different participations since while Cruz Azul and Pumas UNAM have already won the tournament, Leon and Santos have not been able to do so.

Cruz Azul has won the tournament the most times, having won it in 1969, 1970, 1971, and also won the 1996 and 1997 editions, and the 2013 and 2014 editions.

For its part, Pumas UNAM has been crowned in 1980, 1982, and 1989, and from then on, the University team has only been runner-up in 2005 against Saprissa, the team it will face on Wednesday, 16 February at 21:00 CT.

For its part, Leon is now in its seventh participation in the tournament and only in 1993 was it, runner-up, as it was defeated by Deportivo Saprissa.
