The Coloso de Santa Ursula will remain closed for approximately 17 months as it will be remodeled to host the 2026 World Cup.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be hosted by 3 countries: Canada, the United States, and Mexico, for this reason, the stadium will have to be closed to carry out the pertinent remodeling works that will allow the stadium to have the necessary conditions to host the event.

The Azteca Stadium is also looking to be the venue for the opening match of the 2026 World Cup, which has even been evaluated by Gianni Infantino, president of FIFA.

For this reason, authorities, directors, and administrators approved last November the remodeling of the Azteca Stadium, which is being done to host the next World Cup for Mexico, the United States, and Canada.

Club América is left without a home: where will they play?

Due to this remodeling, the Águilas will have to find a new place to play their league matches, as will Cruz Azul, the team with which they share the Azteca stadium, and which is now also without a home.

So far, there have been several rumors that place the Azulcremas at the Nemesio Diez, or even at the Cuauhtemoc Stadium.

And in more extreme cases, it has been rumored that the Coapa club could play its next matches in the United States, where there are a large number of fans of the club, but everything points to Ciudad Deportiva as the destination for the Coapa team.

Thus, if the Águilas go to play at the Ciudad Deportiva stadium, it is very likely that Cruz Azul will also play their matches there, which would mean the club's return to the stadium where they played for 22 years.

Why is the remodeling of the Azteca Stadium necessary for the 2026 World Cup?

It seems that the Azteca Stadium is the oldest of all the stadiums contemplated for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, as the others are well over 15 years old.

While it is true that the Azteca is a building that has received occasional renovations, to host the World Cup it will have to receive an in-depth treatment that will allow the stadium to be up to the challenge of the top national team tournament.
