A lot had been said prior Chivas debut in Clausura 2022, especially about the lack of goals they had last semester and how thing could be similar during this tournament as they didn’t sign any new players, except for Roberto “Piojo” Alvarado, who wasn’t available for this game.

But every question fans and analysts could have about Chivas performance and Marcelo Michel Leaño’s decisions to not reinforce the team were erased this night at Estadio Akron, where Chivas received a Mazatlán, a team that has yet to defeat Chivas for the first time in its history.
As soon as the game started, Chivas became the owner of the ball, but nothing transpired until the end of the first half. Chivas only needed five minutes to win the game, as they scored three goals that remained as the final score.
Ángel Zaldívar opened the score from the penalty kick at 45’ as he crossed his shot leaving Mazatlán goalkeeper out of the play, after receiving a foul that the Video Assistant Referee had to confirm as a penalty.
Just three minutes later, Eduardo Torres scored his first professional goal in Mexico’s top tier division with a golazo from outside the penalty area, after shooting a lob over Vikonis, who could only watch as the ball fell right under the crossbar.
Just seconds after the game resumed, Mazatlán committed another foul outside the penalty area, and Alexis Vega didn’t think twice as he put his shoot just over the wall, leaving Vikonis without an option to prevent the goal.

Although it’s unknown if they plan on adding another player -they already decided not to include Josecarlos van Rankin in their squad even though he’s still under contract-, Chivas will try to keep up with the momentum when they visit Pachuca next week. For now, they finish this first round as leaders of the competition.
