For the Repechaje game against Pumas that gave the last ticket to Liguilla, Chivas arrived with two main incentives: improve the unbeaten streak that they have since Ricardo Cadena took over the team and the contract extension of Alexis Vega.
Chivas: The player gave El Rebaño their ticket to Liguilla wasn’t Vega nor Beltrán
After months of a stuck negotiation between El Rebaño and the 24-year-old left-winger, it was Amaury Vergara who interfered to resume the conversations and seal the contract extension, given that the owner of El Rebaño accepted to make Vega the highest-paid player in the roster.
Before the extension, Vega had only six more months on his contract, and if Chivas were eliminated in Repechaje, he would have been able to start negotiating his arrival at any club as a free agent in December, which is why Vergara gave in to his economic claims.
Now, Alexis Vega is under contract with El Rebaño Sagrado until 2024, something that gives Chivas security that Vega won’t play for any other Liga MX team, but also that, when he leaves, Chivas will receive an economic compensation.
Although part of the strategy of retaining him in Chivas was to have him for Apertura 2022, hence the 2022 FIFA World Cup, where he could improve his market value with a good performance, Alexis Vega could leave El Rebaño sooner than expected.
Reports from several Mexican media outlets pointed out that Amaury Vergara visited Eredivisie side PSV Eindhoven’s facilities during the week, on the same day that Chivas agreed the contract extension of Alexis Vega.
Although his presence in PSV was mainly linked to strengthen the working and economic relationship with the Boeren, they were one of the teams that showed interest in Vega a couple of months back, and eve sent scouts to observe him closely, something that could also be on the agenda of Vergara during his visit to the Netherlands.
During the broadcasting of the game in Marca Claro, they revealed that since Vega’s participation in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, he’s been followed by Primeira Liga side FC Porto , and now that PSV could start negotiations for his transfer, they revived the interest in acquiring him over the summer.
Whichever team that is serious about adding him, will have to pay between $5 million and $10 million for his transfer, as his new contract is friendly towards any offers from European clubs, while prevents Liga MX clubs from pursuing him, as they will have to pay $15 million.
