Pumas UNAM returned to winning ways with a 2-1 victory over León in Ciudad Universitaria, in a match corresponding to matchday 5 of the Clausura 2022. In this match, midfielder Luis Montes Jiménez was applauded by the fans when he made a gesture of Fair Play.
Pumas roar again after beating a weak León
With the Panzas’ Verdes down on the scoreboard, coach Ariel Holan decided to send Luis Montes onto the field to try to level the match, and in the last minutes of the clash, he collided with Pumas winger Washington Corozo.
In the 89th minute of the match, referee Guillermo Pacheco Larios sent off Washington Corozo after he had elbowed the Esmeraldas' captain. The Tuzos del Pachuca youth player immediately called the referee and made it clear that the blow was to his arm and not his face.
As a result, the referee had to change his decision and booked the Ecuadorian striker. It is worth mentioning that the decision could have been changed a few moments later, as the VAR referees would probably have called their teammate to correct the mistake.
After the gesture, fans and some sports analysts were amazed and were grateful that he did not want to take advantage. The referee Pacheco was very busy in the game, as he showed the yellow card several times and also sent off players such as Alan Mozo and Federico Martínez for making strong entries on their opponents.
With this score, Pumas reached nine points and moved into fifth place in the competition, while León remained with five points. The university team will be playing during the week, as they will face Saprissa in the Concacaf Champions League and León will travel to Guatemala to face Guastatoya.
With the victory, Pumas broke the streak of not being able to beat Léon at CU since October 2017, when they won 2-0 on Matchday 10 of that year's Apertura.
The goals for the Auriazules came from José de Oliveira at minute 24 and Arturo Ortiz at 47'; for the Emeralds, Santiago Colombatto scored at 20'.
