After a year out of the pitches, Giovani dos Santos wants to return to Club América

Club América are getting ready to face Apertura 2022 after being eliminated in the semifinals of last season by CF Pachuca. The first movement announced by Las Águilas was the promotion of Fernando “Tano” Ortíz as coach, after the good season he had as interim.

Now, one of the first decisions that “El Tano” Ortíz needs to take is regarding the arrivals, as there are a few positions that need to be strengthen, especially on the offense and in the defensive line, as Las Águilas need a striker that can score consistently and a center-back who doesn’t forget to cover the rival attackers.

But one of the things that Ortíz will also need to solve is the future of Giovani dos Santos, who has been training in Club América facilities for the past few months, as he’s looking to return to Las Águilas after a year out of activity, according to reports from sports journalist Víctor Díaz.

Will dos Santos rejoin Club América?

Gio played for Las Águilas until Clausura 2021, when he became a free agent and couldn’t agree to a contract extension, given that the high salary he was asking was not according to his performances on the pitch.

Since then, he’s been looking to join a new team and was close to signing with Inter Miami CF, but the Herons decided to sign Ecuadorian striker Leonardo Campana instead. Since then, the older of the dos Santos brothers has been training in Club América facilities, hoping to convince Ortíz to have him back.

Although Santiago Baños said in the past that they wouldn’t see with bad eyes his return, they don’t intend on paying him the salary that he’s asking, which is why one of the conditions they will establish for him to return is a considerable pay cut, as well as knowing that he won’t be the starter and that has to win his place back.
