While England fans are still upset about the EUROS 2024 Final loss against Spain, there is hope for the future as the young players in the national team showed a great effort. One of those players who give fans hope is Kobbie Mainoo, who had a breakout year with Manchester United this past season, which earned him a call-up to the national team.

Mainoo started in all of England's knockout stage matches this summer, which helped the team improve and reach another final under Gareth Southgate. While many England fans are satisfied with his performances, a Liverpool legend thinks the opposite.

Graeme Souness thinks highly of Mainoo, but he is not impressed with the way he has been playing. Souness said, "I think he’s [Mainoo] really good on the ball, he’s very talented on the ball, but he doesn’t fully understand the position. He wanders, he empties the middle of the field too readily. I watched him against Iceland [in England’s final Euro 2024 warm-up game] and he was getting thrown to the left and thrown to the right."

Souness continues with his strict criticism for Mainoo and said, "He came on as a substitute when holding onto a 1-0 lead [in the Euro 2024 opener against Serbia] and the first thing he did was chase down the goalkeeper and try to put him under pressure. It’s naivety, he’s still learning the game." Mainoo came on the pitch in the 86th minute of the match against Serbia.

Mainoo played 45 minutes in the last match of the group stage for England against Slovenia, which ended in a 0-0 draw. From that match, it convinced England manager Gareth Southgate to start him for the rest of the games in the EUROS against Slovakia, Switzerland, the Netherlands, and Spain.

Kobbie Mainoo is nominated for a prestigious award

Mainoo's amazing season with Manchester United and his great performances for England at the EUROS has earned him a nomination for a prestigious award. Mainoo is one of the favorites to win the Golden Boy award later this year. He is the only player in the Manchester United squad who is one of the favorites to win this award. Alejandro Garnacho and the club's newest signing, Leny Yoro, are also candidates to win the Golden Boy award this year.
