Kobbie Mainoo is arguably Manchester United's most exciting young talent in their squad as the 19-year-old midfielder had impressed this past season in the Premier League, which earned him a call-up to the England national team. Mainoo played and started in most of England's matches at EURO 2024, which led to them reaching the European Championship Final. With great performances these past months of the year so far, the midfielder is set for a bright future.
Mainoo will now likely start for most of the Manchester United games under Erik Ten Hag this upcoming season, and fans believe he should be in the starting 11 without question. Not only have the fans been impressed, but the club's legendary manager as well. Former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has been very pleased by the performances of Kobbie Mainoo, and he had some nice words to say about the young midfielder.
When asked about Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho, the other young star of Man United, Sir Alex Ferguson said, "They’re young. They’ve both shown they have the composure and the confidence to play in the first team. They’ve not been daunted by it - it shows their courage. It is a distinction for human beings, some people have it, and some don't, but they [Mainoo and Garancho] have it."
Mainoo made his senior debut for Manchester United in January 2023 in an EFL Cup match against Charlton Atheltic. He was named on the Manchester United bench for the first time on October 16, 2022, for a match against Newcastle United. Mainoo made his first Premier League start for the team this past season in a 3-0 win against Everton at Goodison Park, where he impressed Ten Hag and the fans.
Since the match against Everton, Mainoo has played 24 matches in the Premier League, where he started in all of them. He scored three goals and provided one assist for Man United. He was then called up for the England national team for the first time in March 2024. He came on in the 75th minute against Brazil in a friendly match in which England lost 1-0 at Wembley Stadium.
He started and played 74 minutes against Belgium, which resulted in a 2-2 draw at Wembley Stadium as well. He finished the season with Man United strong as Mainoo scored in the FA Cup final against Manchester City, where the team won 2-1 to win the FA Cup.
Mainoo earned himself a call-up for the England national team for EURO 2024 this summer after just two caps for England for the March friendlies against Brazil and Belgium. Mainoo did not start in the first game for England in the group stage, which was a 1-0 win for them against Serbia. He came on in the 86th minute of the match. He then sat on the bench for the 1-1 draw against Denmark in the group stage.
Mainoo then played 45 minutes in the last match of the group stage against Slovenia, which ended 0-0. Mainoo replaced Conor Gallagher, who started the match in the midfield next to Declan Rice. Those 45 minutes were vital to impress the England coach Gareth Southgate. Mainoo remained in the starting lineup for England in the knockout stages. Mainoo played against Slovakia in the Round of 16, Switzerland in the quarterfinals, the Netherlands in the semifinals, and Spain in the EUROS Final. Mainoo impressed many fans in the tournament despite England not winning the competition.
