England has reached the final of the EUROS after beating the Netherlands 2-1 last night in the semifinals at the Borussia Dortmund stadium. The English players and fans celebrated the huge win that meant another European Championship final in a row under Gareth Southgate. The team was not convincing to many fans throughout the tournament, but now they have reached the final, and many England fans are grateful for the performances of Kobbie Mainoo. The Manchester United youngster started the Round of 16 match against Slovakia and since has not lost his spot in the starting midfield position. He made history in the match against the Netherlands as he became the youngest England player ever to play in a semifinal in European Championship history. Sport Bible reports that he is the youngest player in the competition's history to play in a semifinal since this week; it was Lamine Yamal from Spain who broke that record. Mainoo has started in the three knockout stages for England at the EUROS and is likely to start in the European Championship Final this Sunday against Spain at the Olympiastadion in Berlin. The youngest player to represent England in a major international tournament was Michael Owen in the 1998 World Cup, who was 18 years and five months old.
Mainoo had an incredible match against the Netherlands in the semifinal. He had 100% tackles won, 100% duels won, and 100% long passes completed. Mainoo also created a chance for England and had a shot blocked. The midfielder shows his capabilities to attack and defend at the same time, which has helped England tremendously to reach another EURO final, which many believed was not possible after the group stage performances. He completed 36 passes and had 51 touches of the ball against the Netherlands.
Declan Rice has been his partner in the midfield for England in the knockout stages, and before the match, he praised the young Manchester United midfielder for his performances at the EUROS. Rice said, "Every time I've seen him playing for United on the TV, he has been pretty much their best player every game. I've been asked a lot by my friends 'what's Mainoo like?' - and he's really, really impressive. I really want him to enjoy his career. I think it's really important that we don't put too much pressure on him. He's at one of the biggest clubs in the world, and now he's at England we just want to let him flourish. He's so composed."
Mainoo being called up for the England national team for the EUROS was an earned call-up by many English fans, especially Manchester United fans. In the first match of the EUROS for England against Serbia, he came on in the 86th minute. He was benched against Denmark but then played 45 minutes against Slovenia, which convinced Southgate to start him against Slovakia in the Round of 16. He played 84 minutes against Slovakia, 78 minutes against Switzerland, and 89 minutes against the Netherlands.
