Last week, France eliminated the Portuguese national team from the EUROS in the quarterfinals. The match ended 0-0 after 120 minutes, leading to a penalty shootout. Portugal lost 5-3 on penalties to France after Joao Felix missed his penalty by hitting the post. It was a decent camping trip for Portugal, which topped its group but could not score a goal in the knockout stage. The squad was filled with talent, and one of the players who didn't get enough playing time was the young Benfica midfielder João Neves. There was a lot of hype around the player due to his performances with Benfica this past season, but he could start for Portugal ahead of the likes of Bruno Fernandes, Vitihna, and Palhinha. Despite the lack of minutes, Manchester United are convinced to sign the defiler this summer, as he is seen as the perfect pivot they need to play next to Kobbie Mainoo. The Premier League club is willing to offer around $76 million plus add-ons to Benfica, but the Portuguese club wants more than $120 million. Man United believes a bid of around $90 million will be enough to make the signing happen.
Neves was benched for three out of five Portugal matches at the EUROS. He came on the pitch for Portugal in the 88th minute against Turkiye, which resulted in a 3-0 win. Neves started in the match against Georgia, which led to Portugal losing 2-0. He played a total of 75 minutes, where he had a shot blocked and had a 93% pass accuracy. He did not get a single minute in the knockout stages for Portugal against Slovenia or France.
What got Manchester United fans excited was the friendship he built with two Manchester United players in the Portugal national team during the EUROS. He was close with Bruno Fernandes and Diogo Dalot. Man United fans hope that Fernandes and Dalot convince Neves to join the club.
Neves played a total of 55 matches for Benfica this past season, which included six matches in the Champions League and in the Europa League. Despite being a pivot, he scored three goals and provided two assists.
