Jamal Musiala is one of the best players in the world, and has been impressive over the last couple of years for Germany and for Bayern Munich. Musiala was born on February 26th, 2003, in Stuttgart, Germany. He is about 6ft tall and is known to play as an attacking midfielder or as a winger. He has a Nigerian-British father and a Polish-German mother and grew up in Germany until he was seven.
He moved to England, where he used to play for Southampton's youth team. He was also in the Chelsea academy for many years in England but eventually left in 2019 to join the Bayern Munich academy when he was 16. He represented the German and England youth national teams, but he then picked to represent Germany in 2021.
Musiala spoke about his decision of picking Germany over England and said, "I'd had a tough choice to make. I regularly chatted to the people at the FA and the DFB. They both made it clear that they wanted me to play for them.
It was a difficult decision, as I was born in Germany but most of my memories growing up are in England – both are a part of me. It was an incredible feeling to get my first Germany cap. It felt right pulling that shirt on and representing my birth nation. I knew that I’d made the right decision."
Musiala made his professional debut with Bayern Munich in the summer of 2020 against SC Freiburg. He became the youngest player to play for Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga at 17 years and 115 days old.
Musiala was also a part of the Bayern Munich team that won the 2020 Champions League trophy against PSG in Lisbon, Portugal. Musiala scored his first Bundesliga goal in the 8-0 win against Schalke in September 2020. He was the youngest Bayern Munich goalscorer, 17 years old and 205 days old.
Musiala made his debut in the Champions League against Red Bull Salzburg in a 6-2 win. On February 23rd, 2021, Musiala scored his first Champions League goal against Lazio in a 4-1 win in the first leg of the Champions League Round of 16.
He broke another record for Bayern Munich as he became the youngest player in the club's history to score in the European competition. He signed his first professional contract with Bayern Munich in March 2021, which expires in the summer of 2026. This was his breakout year for Bayern Munich, and from there, he improved even more.
Musiala got his name out there when he scored the decisive goal for Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga title race against Borussia Dortmund in the 2021/2022 season as he scored in the 3-1 win against Dortmund to clinch Bayern's tenth league title in a row. Musiala was appreciated even in the following season [22/23 season] as the title race between Bayern and Borussia Dortmund was even tighter.
Dortmund was minutes away from winning the Bundesliga title, but an 89th-minute winner by the German attacking midfielder sealed a 2-1 win against Koln and Bayern's 11th consecutive league title.
It was in 2021 when he decided to represent Germany instead of England, and he received his first call-up for the German national team in March 2021 for the FIFA World Cup 2022 qualifiers. He made his first appearance for Germany in a major international tournament at EURO 2020, which took place in the summer of 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Musiala participated in EURO 2020 for Germany and became the youngest German player to feature in a major international tournament for Germany in the 2-2 draw against Hungary. Germany was knocked out of the tournament by England in the Round of 16 by losing 2-1.
Musiala scored his first international goal for Germany in the 4-0 win against North Makedonia on October 11th, 2021. He is the second youngest player to score in Germany.
All the performances at Bayern Munich led to him being called up for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. He was the first German teenager to feature in the World Cup since 1958 when he made his debut in the prestigious competition against Japan. It was a forgettable tournament for Germany, as they were grouped while Japan and Spain advanced.
Musiala was then called up for EURO 2024 and was heading into the competition as arguably the best player in the squad. He demonstrated that by scoring three goals in the competition. He scored in Germany's opening match of the competition against Scotland, which resulted in a 5-1 win. He scored in the 2-0 win against Hungary and in the 2-0 win against Denmark in the Round of 16. Germany was then knocked out of the competition by Spain in the quarterfinals after losing 2-1 in extra time.
Musiala's contract will expire in the summer of 2026, and as he is one of the best players on the team, many wonder if he will be offered a new contract at the club.
Musiala said, "New deal? For me, the coaching decision was important. I want us to play good, attractive football and compete for the title and Champions League with a good team. This is how I can also show my qualities."
