Brenden Aaronson has made history for US soccer. The youth talented offensive midfielder formed at Philadelphia Union will move to FC Red Bull Salzburg in a historic transfer of $6 million plus bonuses and a percentage of a future transfer, depending on how much time he stays in his new club.
The transfer is a record fee for U.S. based homegrown player in the MLS history and the first time Philadelphia Union academy player moves to a European club. The record marks a change on the transfer market that MLS has been doing during the last years, as now top teams look for young talented player in the U.S.
Aaronson will leave when the season is ended, as he is a key player to Union right now. His new club let him finish the ongoing season, in which his team stands at the second position of the Eastern Conference with 35 points out of 18 games with five matches remaining.
Aged 19, Aaronson played 51 games for Union, in which he scored 7 goals and gave 5 assists. He also made his debut for the USMNT in a friendly against Costa Rica played on February 2020.
