FC Barcelona have joined the list of clubs after the signature of Atalanta centre back Cristian Romero after the defender had an impressive performance at the Copa America which Argentina won.

Romero, 23, played three games at the tournament, including the final but missed the others through injury. He was named Italian Serie A defender of the year for the 2020/21 season after helping Atalanta qualify for the UEFA Champions League.

Barcelona want to offload the French duo of centre backs, Samuel Umtiti and Clement Lenglet to reduce the club's wages. The club now wants to sign Romero to link up with fellow Argentines Sergio Aguero and Lionel Messi, who reports say will announce his contract extension soon.

The club has signed four new players ahead of the new season, Emerson Royal, Eric Garcia, Sergio Aguero and Memphis Depay and will face competition from other clubs including English club Tottenham if they are to sign Romero.
