Mexico and the United States will meet again, this time in the second match between them for the Qatar World Cup qualifiers. Team USA has faced El Tri on several occasions throughout history and has recorded negative numbers, although they are slowly getting back on track when they face their hated sporting rival.

Mexico vs United States CONCACAF Qualifying: Who is more likely to win?

Mexico and the United States have met 75 times in history, with 38 wins for the Aztecs, 23 for the Americans, and 14 draws. While El Tri has scored 146 goals, the Stars and Stripes have scored 92.

In 2012, USMNT finally won in the Azteca

On August 15, 2012, the United States silenced the Azteca Stadium and ended Mexico's unbeaten run at the Coloso de Santa Ursula. A solitary goal by Michael Orozco in the 80th minute gave Team USA its only victory at the home of the Mexican national team.

Before that match, Mexico had been practically unbeatable at this venue, with the only defeat in qualifying being the 'Aztecazo tico' prior to Korea-Japan 2002. But that night in 2012, the team of the Stars and Stripes was the first announcement of the precipitous fall experienced by José Manuel de la Torre's El Tri.

Mexico tilted the field, with 66% of the possession and almost tripled the number of shots (19 to 3), but they could not break Tim Howard's goal and on a rebound from a set-piece, Michael Orozco sent it home with 10 minutes to go to give Team USA what remains the only victory in Mexico.

The Azteca lost its unbeaten record and the United States has not lost in Mexico City for 12 years, when Miguel Sabah and Israel Castro scored in a 2-1 comeback on August 12, 2009.

Mexico vs United States in finals

Throughout history, the two teams have met in nine finals, with six wins for Mexico and three for the United States. The only time El Tri had lost was the 2007 Gold Cup, but history repeated itself in the Concacaf Nations League 2021 and the Gold Cup of the same year.

CONCACAF World Cup Qualifiers Qatar

Mexico and the United States will face each other to secure a place in the 2022 Qatar World Cup. Both teams currently have 21 points, so they are tied in the standings, but Gregg Berhalter's team is in second place due to a better goal difference.

With only three games remaining, the winner would be a big step towards securing their ticket to Qatar. Given the circumstances, Mexico has a slight home-field advantage, but nothing is set in stone.
