Croatia and Russia are the two countries at the summit of the FIFA World Cup qualification UEFA series and the two teams are currently facing each other to decide who wins the group and qualifies directly.
The last time the FIFA World Cup was played was in 2018, Russia hosted it and Croatia made it to the final before losing to eventual winners France. Russia qualified then as hosts but have proved this year they can qualify directly.
Russia began the match as group leaders with 22 points while Croatia had 20 points. A draw means the group remains the same way and Russia qualifies automatically while a win for Croatia means they go ahead of Russia while it could be much easier for Russia if they win.
The two countries have faced off six times before today's match. Croatia have never lost to Russia, they have won three matches and drawn three matches. Their last match was at the 2018 FIFA World Cup where Croatia eliminated Russia on penalties after a 2-2 draw.
